Comment The word «сортир» for toilet first appeared in the end of the XVIII — in the beginning of the XIX centuries, when French was in fashion in noble circles. It is well known that in a tricky situation the nobility switched to French and instead of saying directly «I am going to the toilet», they used to say «je dois sortir» («I need to go out»). So, the verb «sortir» produced a sort of an euphemism with a covert meaning of «toilet». Now it is a substandard word that does not sound elevated, but still it is used by the majority in everyday circumstances. (Wikipedia)
