Comment From czerwony złoty 'red gold (coin)', old Polish term for a gold coin, florin, ducat, distinguishing a circulation coin. Polish word is borrowed to Russian червонец (dated) 'gold coin' → 'three rouble banknote' (XVIII) → 'five or ten rouble banknote' (XIX) →'ten rouble banknote' (USSR).
