Also Mandarin Chinese fān, fán (帆) 'sail' probably related to fēng (風) 'wind' (Old Chinese *plum 'wind', Karlgren, 1957) and may be from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *buŋ 'wind' (STEDT).
Proto-Finnic *purjeh (Estonian puri, Finnish purje, Ingrian purje, Karelian purjeh, Livonian pūŗaz, Livvi purjeh, Veps pureh, Votic purjõ) 'sail' from Proto-Germanic *buriz 'favourable wind'. Unclear relation with Lithuanian burė, Latvian bura 'sail'.
