In Ancient Rus', the coffin was equated with a boat—a practice that extended to the actual use of boats in the funerals of princes. This custom may have Scandinavian origins. Vestiges of this tradition persisted until recently in the Russian North and among Old Believers, where a hollowed-out log resembling a dugout canoe served as the coffin. In Ukraine, the hewn coffin (труна горбовата) also resembled a hollowed-out log in shape. All of this reflected a conception of death as the crossing of a body of water, with the coffin serving as a ritual vessel. (Седакова О. А. С. Поэтика обряда. In this context, A. F. Zhuravlev cites a Ukrainian proverbial response to someone complaining of a lack of sleep: висписся в човнi (в дубi) "you’ll get your sleep in a boat (in dugout canoe") i.e., in the coffin. (Журавлев А. Ф. Язык и миф. М., 2005. С. 289-290)
