The petals of cranberry flowers are bent back, and the stamens and pistil protrude far forward, resembling a crane's beak.

The plant's name geranium has a similar motivation, only it derives from the shape of the fruit rather than the flower. When ripe, geranium fruits open at the bottom, resembling a beak. The name γεράνιον—literally "crane (plant)"—is found in the first century in the texts of the Greek naturalist Dioscorides and was borrowed into Latin by Pliny the Elder (geranion). It most likely referred to the tuberous geranium (Geranium tuberosum).
Carl Linnaeus used this word as a generic name, but later botanists separated some plants from the genus Geranium into separate genera: Pelargonium (from the Greek πελαργός "stork") and Erodium (from the Greek ἐρωδιός "heron"). As their names suggest, the fruits of all these plants resemble a long bird's beak. Botanist Charles-Louis Lhéritier de Brutelle, author of "Geraniology," divided the genera by the number of stamens: erodium stamens are five, pelargonium are seven, and geranium are ten. The common names of these flowers also reflect their beak-like shape: obsolete French bec-de-grue ‘geranium’ (literally ‘crane’s beak’), English cranesbill, heron's bill ‘erodium’, stork’s bill ‘erodium or pelargonium’, Russian журавелник ‘geranium’ (from журавль 'crane'), аистник 'erodium' (from аист 'stork'), Spanish pico de cigüeña ‘meadow geranium’ (‘stork’s beak’), Danish storkenæb ‘geranium’ (‘stork’s beak’).
