Compare with Pali maggati 'hunts for, seeks'.

The related semantic development cluster from PIA includes: 'to track, to trace, to hunt' leading to 'wild beast, deer' (in Indo-Aryan languages, for example Hindi). Alternative path of semantic development from 'to track, to trace, to hunt' goes to 'wild and domestic fowl, game', after that becoming 'chicken' in Iranian languages. Another variant of development of this root 'to track' also gives in other languages the meaning 'road, path'. See Turner (10071, 10074, p. 579), also (Monier-Williams 1899: 812) for further reference.
