Second part from полошить 'to frighten'. Also чертогон from чёрт + гнать 'to drive away'. The plant was used to fumigate stables to protect livestock from evil spirits and diseases. During an attack of epilepsy in the Cherepovets district of the late 19 century, a lying patient was outlined in a circle and beaten with a thistle stalk.

Also чертополох can be used for plants from genera Agrimonia, Arctium, Carlina, Cirsium, Echinops, Eryngium, Onopordon, Sonchus, Xanthium.

Also dialectal чертогон (second part from гнать 'to chase away'), чертопугальник (second part from пугать 'to frighten').
