| comment | In Serbia, "old women considered it a disgrace if a young wife called her husband by name; they themselves grew old without ever calling their husbands by name" (Милићевић 1984, 136-137). In Kosovo Polje "it was not accepted in the old days for a woman to call her husband by his name; instead she would say onaj, ovaj, starče, more, čoveku (he, that, this, old man, man). If a woman called her husband by his name or if he called her by his name, then according to popular belief, "the forest on the mountains would dry up" (Gora će osušiti). It was considered shameful and disgraceful if a wife called her husband by his real name, as he did her. She would say he about her husband, and her husband would say she about his wife.
