comment | 'sky seam' |
The Milky Way can be thought of as a seam connecting the two halves of the sky.
The motif of the celestial seam is also observed among the Turkish and Nogais.
The Miao people in southern China have a mythological narrative in which, following the rupture of the sky, they commenced repairs. The largest fissure was subsequently covered with a white kerchief, representing the stars as the nails driven in during the repair.
