Wolf days (wolf feasts) - among the southern Slavs, calendar days or periods dedicated to protection from wolves. The first cycle of wolf days among the Bulgarians (вълчите, вучки, въкови празници, вълкови деня), and among the Serbs (вучjи празник) covers the period from the day of St. Martin (11.XI), hence the common name of the cycle (Bulgarian, Serbian мартинци, мратинци, Macedonian мратињака), occasionally from the day of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki (26.X) to St. Sava (5.XII), revered by the Serbs as both a protector from wolves and their patron. In general, wolf days occurred in November - early December. The most significant dates are the The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (XI 21), also called Вълчата богородица (Wolf's Our Lady) in Bulgaria, and the day of St. Philip (24.XI). The duration of wolf days in each tradition ranges from three to eight days. Feasts could be personified as wolves. The second important cycle of wolf days was the beginning of February. Some other days were also celebrated. The South Slavic wolf days go back to the common Balkanian cult of the wolf (best preserved among the Romanians). Slavic wolf days come down primarily to the observance of prohibitions, fasting, and also to some protective rituals.
