in Greek mythology the Pleiades (Πλειάδες), seven divine sisters, the name supposedly deriving from that of their mother Pleione (Πληιόνη, Πλειόνη) and effectively meaning "daughters of Pleione". However, the name of the star-cluster likely came first, and Pleione was invented to explain it.
