Lampreys attach themselves to rocks to avoid being washed away by the current, especially during spawning migrations. Their oral sucker is designed in such a way that it allows them to firmly attach themselves to hard surfaces such as rocks. This allows them to move upstream to their spawning grounds. Some lampreys also use rocks for resting, attaching themselves to them in calmer parts of the river.
