Note the same shift in active voice: massat-hu l-jinn-u 'the jinn, or genii touched him, i.e. affected him with madness'. By the way, the verb massa has various metaphorical meanings, like to strike (of anything annoying or hurtful that befals a man)to distress; to happen to smb, to betide; to take, etc.
