The reason for the name is uncertain; perhaps it is in reference to the tiny chaff-like external seeds which cover the fruit, or the long stems on which the fruit grows (see pictures) (https://www/etymonline.com/word/strawberry). Also, the name can come from the fact that it was customary to lay straw around the berries so that they did not touch the ground and become rot (the so-called mulching).
