The phrase was identified by Praetorius 1879:297 with Gez. DTW 212 connects bərät of Amh. yä-ayn bərät with bərät 'iron', the pupil of the eye being compared with polished iron that reflects an image (CDG 99).

This is the only example in Geez where Semitic bənt 'daughter' is used. Noeldeke 1910:135, n.5 thinks that bənta ˁayn is taken from Arb. bintu-l-ˁayn (for more see CDG 99).
